Odyssey offers an innovative approach to education by providing its students with instruction in a second language, Greek, along with an emphasis in mathematics. The Greek language provides an additional focus on the classic roots and fundamentals of English, language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies.
A rigorous standards-based curriculum and instruction in the Greek language is delivered in a challenging, yet nurturing, learning environment. Odyssey students thrive and excel in all academic areas while developing into well-rounded and respectful world citizens.
The mission of Odyssey Charter School is to prepare students for a lifelong enthusiasm for learning, develop a keen awareness of world citizenship and culture, and establish critical thinking and problem-solving proficiency through the added learning of the Modern Greek language and Mathematics focus.
The core philosophy of Odyssey Charter School is that students from all walks of life will establish a lifelong enthusiasm for learning, will become critical thinkers and problem solvers, and will develop a keen awareness of world citizenship when challenged with a structured bilingual and rigorous core curriculum occurring in a nurturing environment.
Our school has recently been the recipient of major academic awards from the State of Delaware and the Delaware Charter School Network. The awards, for two years of “exceptional academic performance,” strongly support the notion that our students, parents, teachers and administration, working with our PTO, have helped orchestrate dramatic increases in student achievement to record levels at Odyssey.
Just two years ago, at the conclusion of the 2011 – 2012 school year, our school’s third grade reading scores were ranked 35th out of 108 in the state and 27th in mathematics. Our fourth graders were 23rd and 17th, respectively. They have improved to rankings of 11th and 3rd in third grade and 3rd and 1st respectively in fourth grade among all state elementary schools. From those lows two years ago, while the school’s staff and student population have nearly doubled, our academic achievement levels have improved to the point where they have been recognized as “exceptional” by the State of Delaware and our Department of Education (DOE)...
Odyssey Charter School has officially been recognized by the state of Delaware and awarded one of the State of Delaware’s Recognition Awards, also known as the Delaware Academic Achievement Awards.
The reason our school has been named a 2014 Recognition School is that Odyssey Charter School was one of the schools that had “exceptional performance,” that met AYP/AMOs for each of the past two years, and ranked based on a weighted score of: percent proficient in ELA, percent proficient in Math, and percent of population in at-risk groups (combined African American, Hispanic, students with disabilities, ELLs, and Free/Reduced Lunch), all in the most recent year.
