Middle School at Odyssey

Delaware's Number One Public Middle School
OCS Middle School serves students in Grades 6 through 8 in Building 21. Named the number one public middle school in Delaware by Niche.com, OCS Middle School is where the classical Hellenic education model reaches its full stride.
Students arrive with years of Greek language experience behind them and leave with Intermediate Mid to Intermediate High proficiency on the ACTFL scale. They graduate middle school as confident bilingual learners, independent thinkers, and young people with a clear sense of who they are and what they are capable of.
Building on the Foundation: Everything students learn in elementary school at OCS is designed to grow at the middle school level. Greek language instruction does not restart. It deepens. Academic expectations do not reset. They expand.
The habits of mind built in Kindergarten through Grade 5 become the tools students use to tackle more complex problems, more demanding texts, and more sophisticated ideas.
Curriculum and Instruction
OCS Middle School curriculum is standards based and aligned to Common Core State Standards across all core subjects. Greek language instruction is aligned to ACTFL K to 12 Proficiency Guidelines and World Readiness Standards for Learning Languages.
The Socratic Method and inquiry-based approach to learning that defines OCS from Kindergarten carries fully into middle school. Students are expected to question, debate, and defend their thinking. Independent thought is not just encouraged. It is taught.
Immersion students in middle school continue social studies and Greek language instruction in Greek, maintaining the 50% bilingual instructional model that has driven their outperformance of state peers by 140 to 200% in ELA and Math.

Exploratory and CTE Courses
Middle school at OCS is where students begin to discover their interests and explore potential career pathways. The exploratory and CTE courses available at this level are unique to middle school and designed to give students meaningful exposure to fields they may pursue in high school and beyond.
Grade 6 Greek Culinary Arts
Introduces students to food science, sustainability, and the cultural history of food through a Greek lens. This connects directly to OCS's Food Studies CTE pathway and the school's hydroponics and aeroponics program, which produces more than two tons of fresh produce annually for the community.
Grades 7 and 8 Greek Mythology
Woven into English Language Arts and visual arts, deepening understanding of how ancient Greek civilization shaped the modern world. Students explore literature, philosophy, and culture through primary and secondary sources, building cross disciplinary thinking that carries into high school AP courses.
CTE Pathway Exploration
Begins formally in middle school, giving students early exposure to the six pathways available in high school: Biomedical Science, Business Information Management, Computer Science, Digital Communication Technology, Food Studies, and K to 12 Teacher Academy.

Greek Language at Middle School
Greek language instruction is a core course throughout all three years of middle school. In Grade 6, students receive five hours of Greek language instruction per week alongside Greek Visual Arts. In Grades 7 and 8, Greek language continues as a core course with a focus on moving students from Intermediate Low toward Intermediate High proficiency on the ACTFL scale.
Students are assigned to honors and regular Greek language classes based on their proficiency level. This ensures every student is appropriately challenged and supported regardless of their starting point.
Students may elect to sit for Ellinomatheia exams in middle school. OCS is an officially recognized Ellinomatheia Examination Center and provides extra preparation classes at no cost to families. Ellinomatheia certification at B1 level and above can be applied toward college credits and the State of Delaware Certificate of Multiliteracy.
Assessment in
Middle School
OCS uses a combination of state assessments and nationally normed benchmarks to measure student progress across all middle school grade levels.
State assessments include Smarter Balanced in ELA and Math for Grades 6 through 8, DeSSA Science in Grade 8, and DeSSA Social Studies in Grades 6 through 8. i-Ready is used as an adaptive online platform for personalized reading and math progress monitoring. PSAT is administered in Grade 9 but preparation begins in middle school.
