Common Questions

The Questions Most Families Ask First

Most families are more likely to be eligible than they realize.

Do we have to be Greek to apply?

No. OCS welcomes families of every background, ethnicity, and culture. Greek language is part of the curriculum for every student, but no prior knowledge of Greek and no Greek heritage is required. Most OCS families are not of Greek descent.

Do we have to live in Wilmington?

No. OCS is open to all legal residents of Delaware, regardless of city or district. Families from across the state are eligible to apply during open enrollment.

My child is not currently in a Delaware school — can we still apply?

Yes, but there is one step to complete first. Delaware state law (Senate Bill 82) requires that students not currently enrolled in a Delaware public school register at their School of Residence before applying to a charter school. This is a simple registration step, not a commitment to attend.

Core Requirements

What You Need to Qualify

Here is everything your family needs to know before you apply.

Apply Now

Do I need to live in Delaware?

Yes. You must be a legal resident of Delaware at the time of enrollment. Your child must live with their primary or named custodial parent or legal guardian. You will be asked to verify your address before enrollment is finalized.

How old does my child need to be for Kindergarten?

Your child must turn 5 years old on or before August 31 of the enrollment year. OCS does not offer early admission to Kindergarten. There are no exceptions to this requirement.

Which grade can my child apply for?

Students must apply for the next consecutive grade they would enter at their current school. A student currently in 2nd grade applies for 3rd grade at OCS. Students must be academically promoted into that grade level to apply at the corresponding level.

What if my child is not currently in a Delaware school?

Students not currently enrolled in a Delaware public, charter, or vocational school must first register at their School of Residence. Applications submitted without proof of registration or pre registration will be marked incomplete and will not be entered in the lottery. Complete this step before submitting your OCS application.

Do I need to reapply every year?

No. Current OCS students do not reapply. Your child's seat is secured until graduation. Families new to OCS may reapply each year during open enrollment if needed.

Application Accuracy Standard

We hold every application to the same standard. Applications found to contain false information will be disqualified. The student and their parent or guardian may be barred from future applications. We hold this standard to ensure a fair process for every family in Delaware.
